Fun
Sometimes our family goes down to the lake and jump off the bridge. I jumped off it 10 times. It was scary. I jumped to my dad so he could grab me when i came up. My brother jumped off it and he is only 7 but he only jumped off 3 times. I understand that, can’t you? My dad jumps off the bridge to get straight into the water. He makes a big splash. We go down to a swimming hole and my two 3 year old brothers collect seaweed and pile it up into a mountain.

Photographs as a context for writing.
We selected a series of photos as a context for descriptive writing. We tried to create a mood and convey feelings. Below are a couple of examples.
Wishing that none of this started, tired and thirsty brave men serve their part in the country. Tired and determined, fighting for their loved ones. Its life or death now.
Back home loved ones try to take their mind off what is happening. Thinking if they are dead or alive. What has become of them? Crying every night thinking what has happened.

Abused girl, depressed as she hides her face in emarrassment. Ashamed as she dries her tears and looks away, hurt showing through her green eyes.
Smudged lipgloss and damp bloodshot eyes show her unhidable pain even though she is trying to cover it. Seeking for something to fill the empty gap inside her heart.
Coming from an insecure background, she struggles to face a harsh life as it comes at her full speed

The Arrival (by Shaun Tan) – a sophisticated picture book as a context for writing.
The Giant
“Quick!” says the man as he pulls the frightened woman away. “Hurry, he’s coming!” The woman grips his hand tightly and runs with him quickening her pace. “Hurry, down here!” The woman clambers down the manhole quickly, followed by the man. The Giant carry’s on his way stepping over the manhole. Minutes pass and the man and woman open up the heavy metal lid that covers up the hazardous hole. “He’s gone.” says the woman. They climb out, and then suddenly clutch each other tight. They are not in London anymore, but the Giants realm.

Golf Golf!!!
Hello Hello Hello” the strange men shout as their voices echo up and across the steep hill. I greet the men across the hill, one by one. My fellow friend with the pointy hat introduces me to some creepy friends of his. I notice five wacky creatures sitting on the hill who are looking at each other with their mouths open like they are saying hello. ’OK, lets play some golf’ says my new Asian friend. I get the ball handed to me, that obviously means that I go first.
‘You get two hits” repeats my Asian friend again.
‘OK, first hit, I’m thinking…’ MISS!!! Second hit.
‘Nice hit’ they all chorus whilst clapping and giving me the thumbs up. ‘Play on…

Parachute.
Today’s the day where I get my chance, im ready from 8hrs of practice. The plane is on the grass runway ready to take me up 11,000 feet in the sky. I slowly walk up like a turtle to the small plane, then I gradually step up and squeeze myself next to 6 more people on the hard cold floor, and im ready to go up up and away.
Drifting down like a loose feather off a bird in the blue sky is actually me. Im hearing nothing only the slightest little whistle of wind between me and my wing. As im still in the sky my sick nervous tummy ach has gone and all I can think about is how beautiful and peaceful it is up so high.
Im now about 50m from cold hard ground, and suddenly wind starts to pick up. I focus and focus what to do when I get close to ground. Im so excited to get to my
encouraging family. I drift down quite quickly and glide my way to earth. One step on hard cold ground, 2 step on ground. I made it, and dizzily fall over but very happy and pleased with myself.

Parachuting
I’m falling at a speedy speed of 200 km per hour. With my big goggley goggles. I try to stare at the world below like a noisy owl but I’m going to fast that everything is blurry.
Then wow!! I slow down and I can actually see. I look up to my master canapé. I can see my landing zone far below.
Arr!! I hit the hard grassy ground with a thud. I fell relived to be back on the ground and to see my family. Then I give my family a hug.
